Get Set Before You Install: A Handy Checklist
Before you start, gather these items to help your install go smoothly.
Pro Tip: Use a hammer drill for hard surfaces like masonry or stone. If mounting to wood fencing or siding, shorter studs may be required (easy to find at any hardware store).
Line It Up: Create Your Drilling Guide
QuickShip numbers, letters and symbols include individual templates that you tape together to create a drilling guide. Templates can be assembled in either a horizontal or vertical orientation.
-
For a Horizontal Install
-
Align the templates using the dashed top and bottom guidelines to keep them straight in a horizontal line.
-
Decide on spacing before taping. A ruler works best; we recommend 1–3 inches depending on the size and style of your numbers. Expect a little overlap in the paper edges, this is normal and won’t affect accuracy.
-
-
For a Vertical Install:
-
Use the vertical guidelines on each template to keep your numbers perfectly aligned. Pay close attention to the “X” marks, they’re key to achieving even spacing. Each “X” should be centered exactly between two numbers for the best, most balanced look.
2. Follow the same spacing and taping steps as used in the horizontal layout instructions.
Step-by-Step Installation Guide
-
Position & Drill
With your template assembled either vertically or horizontally, it’s time to transfer the layout to your wall.
-
Tape in Place: Position the template where the address numbers, symbols or letters will go, then secure it with masking tape.
-
Check Alignment: Use a level to make sure the template is perfectly straight , then step back and check it from different angles to ensure you’re happy with the placement.
- Drill Holes: Drill precisely where the template indicates.
-
-
For wood, siding, or stucco → use an 11/64” bit
- For stone, brick, or concrete → use a 3/16” masonry bit with a hammer drill
-
-
Remove Template: Once the holes are drilled, carefully peel away the paper template.
2. Insert the Studs
Apply Epoxy: Add a small amount of clear, exterior-grade, quick-drying epoxy to one end of each stud. Use just enough to hold it in place; too much can squeeze out during installation.
-
Insert Studs: Slide each stud into the pre-drilled hole on the back of your number, letter, or symbol. Make sure it goes in straight and all the way.
-
Tap if Needed: If the fit is snug, gently tap the stud with a rubber mallet. Always place a soft cloth between your work table and the face of the number to prevent dents or scratches.
-
Check Alignment: After inserting each stud, check to make sure it is straight and evenly seated. Getting each stud aligned now makes the rest of the installation much easier.
3. Add Spacers
Slide Spacers onto the Studs: While the epoxy on the studs is still tacky, carefully slide the aluminum spacers onto each stud. These spacers create the modern, dimensional “floating” look for your numbers.
-
Ensure a Snug Fit: Press each spacer gently but firmly so it sits flush against the back of the number, letter, or symbol. Getting a good fit here helps everything look sharp once installed.
-
Check Alignment: Take a quick look to be sure all the spacers are lined up evenly. If they’re off, it can throw off the look and stability of your numbers later.
4. Test Fit
Do a Dry Run: Before applying epoxy to the exposed ends of the studs, insert each number into the wall holes to confirm everything fits smoothly.
-
Check for Obstructions: The studs should slide in easily and let your number, letter, or symbol sit flat against the installation surface without any tilt.
-
Adjust if Needed: If any holes or studs are slightly misaligned, make corrections now. This step prevents mistakes before the adhesive sets, saving time later and making sure you end up with a clean installation.
5. Mount the Numbers
Add a small amount of clear, exterior-grade epoxy to the exposed ends of each stud. Use just enough to create a secure bond without excess squeezing out.
-
Press Numbers into Place: Carefully insert the numbers into the pre-drilled holes, ensuring each stud is fully seated inside the wall. This helps keep moisture out and prevents rust down the road.
-
Gently Tap into Place If Needed: If a number feels snug, give it a light tap with a rubber mallet. Place a soft cloth between the mallet and the number to protect the finish.
-
Final Alignment Check: Step back and take a look. Make sure everything lines up straight, evenly spaced, and looking just the way you want.
Pro Tip: Make sure the studs are fully seated and the spacers are in place, this gives you a solid, professional-looking install that will hold up beautifully outdoors for years.
6. Finish Up & Admire
Carefully wipe away any excess epoxy and give your installation a final check. Step back to appreciate the clean lines and modern look of your newly installed QuickShip numbers.Your entryway just got a professional, polished upgrade!
